Holiday Gift Guide 2008: Top Planes
If there is anything an RC enthusiast wants for a holiday gift, it is an airplane. Sure there are lots of other ideas but airplanes go right to the top of the list. RC flyers love them all. But once again we checked with the many airplane experts at Horizonhobby.com to come up with the very best selection for each person and make your choice easy. There are ready-to-fly airplanes and there are almost-ready-to-fly models that will have them all smiling with excitement. Our final selection was very difficult but we are confident these models are perfect in every case; in fact this list is on my counter top at home.
Sport flyers everywhere know about ParkZone’s new version of the famous F4U Corsair. It is equipped with Spektrum’s DX5e DSM2 radio, a 480 Brushless outrunner motor and Li-Po battery for ultimate control, exceptional performance and increased flight time. A fixed landing gear and steerable tail wheel allow for smooth takeoffs and landings. Many people will want to remove the landing gear for that “retract gear” look in the air. The attention to scale details in this plane is amazing, from its historically representative 3-color trim scheme to the pilot figure inside the cockpit. The “Bent Wing Bird” is every RC guy’s favorite WWII warbird.

The E-flite Hawker Sea Fury 400 ARF offers lightweight, durable and easily repairable injected molded foam construction. This is another model that is easy to fly by just about any RC pilot but aerobatic enough to become a favorite of everyone. The list of scale detail includes a factory painted and installed cockpit, pilot figure and canopy. This 400-sized aircraft boasts factory-finished and installed spars, hinges, and control horns. You have the option to select between fixed landing gear or included retractable landing gear. All of the parts are included for either of the landing gear options. The builder will have to provide a radio, speed control, battery and motor. It will be flying very soon after opening the box.

Equipped with 3-channel control and Spektrum 2.4GHz radio technology, the Radian can be flown without the worry or risk of interference. Although a powerful 480 brushless motor enables initial launch, the propeller soon folds back to reduce drag, freeing the plane to utilize thermals of air to remain aloft, instead of using batteries. That means flight times for this quiet and eco-friendly alternative are much longer than they are with traditional electric aircraft, making a relaxing day in the great outdoors even better.
Like all of ParkZone’s innovative and high-quality aircraft, the Radian looks great right out of the box and provides pilots with the control and reliability they seek in a park flyer. The plane’s large 2-meter wingspan and elliptical dihedral design improve flight performance and visibility from the ground, while plug-in wings provide for easy transportation and storage.
The Radian is available as both a Ready-To-Fly and as a Plug-N-Play®. The RTF includes the DX5e radio—a full range system utilizing the DSM2 2.4GHz protocol. The buyer will be able to use the radio for just about any type of model as well as the Radian. The PNP Radian is for the modeler who already owns a transmitter, receiver, 1300mAh Li-Po battery and Li-Po charger.
Not only does the Radian’s lightweight Z-Foam™ construction offer the perfect balance of weight and durability, it also makes repairs simple and quick. Since everything needed to get the Radian airborne is included inside, you are only minutes away from the ultimate soaring adventure.

E-flite’s BAe Hawk 15 DF ARF is a sport scale version of the British jet trainer. It is constructed of fiberglass and balsa, the Hawk is totally prefinished with scale details and trim. This exciting model was designed around E-flite’s Delta V 15 (69mm) fan unit and matched 15 DF brushless motor. Pilots can use a 3-cell battery pack or utilize a 4-cell battery pack for increased vertical performance. The built-in fan mount makes installing the fan easy—just drop in the fan unit and tighten four screws. Intermediate pilots will find this one a very engaging project with true jet-style performance in the air.

Hangar 9 is known for introducing very nice models with excellent construction and beautiful covering. Carden has joined forces with Hangar 9 to introduce a scaled down version of their Yak 54 in this new 89” wingspan Carden Edition Yak. This is for discriminating modelers who love large airplanes and the level of performance top-of-the line airplanes offer. This one uses a 50cc to 60cc gas engine. Construction is balsa and plywood with foam core wings. Of course, this airplane is fully 3D capable, but it complements the best of any pilot’s skills when it comes to performing any series of maneuvers.
